Power function of a test

The power function of a test of H0:θΘ0 against Ha:θΘ1

π(θ)={α(θ)for value of θ assumed under H01β(α)for value of θ assumed under Ha

The power function is the probability of rejecting the H0 for a given value of θ, π(θ)=P(reject H0|θ)

Select a critical region that has a small α and largest power (1β) for the specific test being done

If a test satisfies P(reject H0|H0 is true)α then the test is called an α level significant test

An α level significant test with the smallest β is called the uniformly most powerful test (UMPT)

When testing a simple null versus a simple alternative the N-P lemma gives the most powerful test
